The simplest door there is
A tip-up garage door is one panel — steel, aluminium or timber — that swings out at the bottom and up at the top on pivot arms either side, until it lies flat under the garage ceiling. There are no hinges between panels, no barrel, no cables on drums. Springs on the pivot arms counterbalance the panel so it lifts easily by hand, and a motor, where fitted, pushes the top of the panel back along a short rail. It is the oldest of the three designs and it is what most single garages built in Cape Town before the two-thousands have.
Its simplicity is its case. A tip-up is the cheapest door to buy, the easiest to automate, and the one with the fewest parts to fail. It is also the door most often made in timber, which is why so many older Southern Suburbs and City Bowl houses have one, and why like-for-like replacement of a rotted timber tip-up is one of the commonest installation jobs on this side of the city.
The one thing a tip-up needs
Clearance in front. Because the panel swings out before it goes up, a car parked close to a tip-up stops it opening, and so does a bin, a bicycle, or a driveway gate that closes too near the garage. On a short driveway that faces the street, a tip-up is the door people leave open because closing it means moving the car, and that is the reason so many have been replaced with sectionals over the last twenty years. Where the driveway has the length, a tip-up is a perfectly good door. Where it does not, it is the wrong one, and the measuring visit says so.
What it does not need is headroom above the opening or depth behind it beyond its own height, which makes it the fallback for garages where neither a sectional's tracks nor a roll-up's barrel will fit. It is the door for the awkward opening.
Timber, and what it asks for
A timber tip-up looks right on an older house in a way no steel door does, and it is worth keeping where it is sound. What it asks for is maintenance: the bottom rail takes the weather and rots first, the panel boards crack and cup, and the finish needs redoing every few years or the water gets in. A timber tip-up that has been looked after lasts decades. One that has not is replaced when the rot reaches the frame, because the frame is what carries the pivot arms and springs, and a rotten frame is a panel waiting to come off its pivots.
Where a timber door is being replaced like-for-like, the new door is made to the opening — timber tip-ups are not off-the-shelf — and it is fitted with the pivot hardware, springs and, where wanted, a motor sized for a swinging panel. Where the owner wants the look without the maintenance, a steel or aluminium tip-up with a timber-effect finish is the compromise, and it is an honest one.
Automating a tip-up
A tip-up is the easiest door to automate and the easiest to automate badly. The geometry of a swinging panel means the motor works hardest at the start of the lift, when the panel is moving out as much as up, and a motor rated for a sectional's straight lift will strain at that point and bend its arm. The right motor for a tip-up has an arm and a rating designed for the swing, and it is fitted to a door whose springs have been checked and balanced first, because a heavy tip-up bends motor arms faster than any other door.
Garage door automation covers the sizing. Beams, force limits and rolling-code remotes are standard, and the motor's manual release is shown to you, because a tip-up in a power cut is lifted by hand at the panel rather than at a cord.
Repairs on a tip-up
The parts that fail are few. The springs on the pivot arms lose their tension, and the door becomes heavy and the motor strains — a spring job, and on a tip-up the springs are replaced as a pair. The pivot bearings wear, and the door squeaks and then drags. On a timber door, the bottom rail rots and is replaced without replacing the panel, where the frame is sound. On a steel door, a bumper dent is usually cosmetic unless it is at a pivot bracket. A tip-up that is jammed partway is usually a pivot arm that has come off or a spring that has snapped, and both are secured before they are repaired.
