Before you call
If the door is stuck open, do not leave the property. If a spring has snapped — a loud bang, then a door too heavy to lift — do not try to lift it, and keep children and pets out of the garage until the technician arrives. A snapped spring is the one garage door fault that hurts people.
If the door is stuck shut with the car inside, most motors have a manual release cord — usually a red handle hanging from the motor rail. Pulling it disengages the motor so the door can be lifted by hand, provided the springs are intact. If the door will not lift after the release, stop: that is the spring, not the motor, and it is a garage door motor repair only after the spring is dealt with.

What should I tell you when I call?
Three things, in this order: which suburb you are in and whether there is an estate or complex gate; what the door is doing — stuck open, stuck shut, crooked, motor running but not moving, a loud bang; and whether a car is locked inside or the house is exposed. That decides which van comes and what is on it.
Do you need me to be there?
For the diagnosis and the quote, yes — you approve the price before work starts. Once that is agreed, a neighbour, tenant or domestic worker can let the technician in.
Can I send a photo on WhatsApp first?
Please do. A photo of the door, the motor and — if a spring has gone — the spring itself lets the technician load the right parts before setting off, which is often the difference between one visit and two.
