The four ways a garage door motor fails, and what each one sounds like
A garage door motor does not fail randomly. It fails in a handful of predictable ways, and the symptom tells a technician which one before the van leaves. The most common in Cape Town is the motor that runs — you hear it, the light comes on, the rail hums — while the door stays exactly where it is. That is a stripped drive gear or a slipped chain or belt. The motor is turning; nothing is turning with it. It is the cheapest of the four to fix and the parts are on the van.
The second is a motor that does nothing at all. No sound, no light, no response from the remote or the wall button. That is power first, then the transformer, then the logic board. It is the one where the diagnosis matters most, because a dead board and a tripped breaker present identically from the driveway and cost nothing alike.
The third is a door that starts and then reverses, or stops partway and refuses to continue. That is the safety system doing its job — either the beam sensors across the opening are misaligned or blocked, or the force limit is tripping because the door has become heavy. The motor is fine. The door has a problem it is being protected from, and nine times out of ten that problem is a spring that has lost its wind.
The fourth is the intermittent one: works in the morning, does not in the evening, works for a week and then not for a day. What gets checked before anything is replaced
The single most expensive mistake in garage door work is replacing a motor that was never the problem. So the first thing a technician does, before touching the motor, is pull the manual release and lift the door by hand. A balanced door lifts with two fingers and stays wherever you leave it. Repair the motor, or replace it

Replacement is the honest answer in three situations.
