Blocks, basements and the managing agent
Sea Point lives in blocks, and the garage door on most of them is the basement roller shutter or sectional that every resident drives through. When it fails, it fails for the building, and the call comes from the managing agent with a hundred cars behind it. A basement door stuck shut at seven in the morning is treated as an emergency at any hour, secured first, and repaired around the residents' cars. What the salt does
Sea Point's air is salt, and salt corrodes the copper on a motor's circuit board, rusts lifting cables from the inside so they look sound and are half their strength, and eats the bottom panel of a steel door from the edge up. A door fitted and serviced here like a suburban door lasts about eight years. One specified for the coast — stainless hinges, rollers and cables, a sealed panel edge, and a shorter service interval — lasts as long as any other, and that specification is the conversation on every Sea Point visit.
