Sea-facing, on a slope
Fresnaye's houses climb the hill above Sea Point, and their garages face the Atlantic across the rooftops below. The salt reaches them as it reaches the seafront: motor boards corrode, cables rust from the inside, bottom panels bubble. The slope adds the City Bowl's problems — driveways that fall to the street, openings cut into the hill — and a sectional that lifts straight up is the usual door, specified with stainless hardware and a sealed panel edge.
Large houses, several doors
The stands are large and the garages hold several cars, on wide doors with heavy springs and motors rated for them, and a house with three doors has three that were fitted together and will fail together. One visit is planned for all of them, and discretion — unmarked arrival, working to the household's timing — is arranged as a matter of course.
Getting here
Fresnaye is minutes from the city up steep roads off Kloof Road. Sea Point, Bantry Bay and Tamboerskloof share the routes, and an emergency is at the fast end.
