Semis, and where the garage went
Tamboerskloof's streets are Victorian semi-detached houses on narrow stands, and the garage — where there is one — was fitted later into the side passage, the front room, or a gap that was never meant to hold a car. The openings are narrow and low, the driveways are short and open onto the street, and the door that fits is usually a roll-up or a timber tip-up kept for the look and automated in place where the frame is sound and the driveway has the swing.
Heritage
The overlay here is real and a steel sectional on a Victorian frontage is the wrong door. A like-for-like timber replacement made to the opening, or a timber-effect steel door where maintenance is the worry, is the answer, and installation starts with what the street will accept as much as what the opening will take.
Getting here
Tamboerskloof is minutes from the city and among the fastest addresses in the Bowl. Gardens, Higgovale and Bo-Kaap share the routes, and an emergency — a door stuck open onto Kloof Nek Road at night — is at the fast end.
