The heritage frontage
Bo-Kaap is the most protected streetscape in the city, and a garage door on Wale Street or Chiappini Street is part of a frontage the overlay has a strong view on. A bare steel sectional is the wrong door. A timber tip-up in the right colour, kept and automated in place where the frame is sound, or a roll-up in a colour that suits the house where there is no room for a swing, is what fits — and installation here starts with what the street will accept.
Steep, narrow and tight
The streets are steep and narrow, the driveways are short and open straight onto them, and a car parked at the kerb is a car parked against the door. That rules out a tip-up on most stands and makes a roll-up the practical answer, and it makes a door stuck open at night an emergency with the house open to a busy street.
Getting here
Bo-Kaap is minutes from the city, with the streets themselves the delay for a van. The city centre, Tamboerskloof and Gardens share the routes.
