The basement door
The city centre has few house garages. Its doors are the roller shutters and commercial sectionals on apartment and office basements, doing hundreds of cycles a day on heavy-duty motors, and when one fails it fails for the building. The call comes from the managing agent, and a basement door stuck shut at seven in the morning — a building that cannot get to work — is treated as an emergency at any hour, secured first, then repaired around the residents' or tenants' cars.
Commercial motors, and access control
A motor repair on a basement door is a commercial parts list — tubular motors, heavy-duty gearboxes, industrial receivers — and a domestic motor fitted to a commercial door, which happens, has a short life. Access is usually tag or remote based, and a receiver that has stopped listening, or a tag register that nobody has maintained through tenant turnover, is the other regular call.
Getting here
The city centre is minutes from everywhere, and the delay is loading zones and building security rather than the drive. Gardens, Bo-Kaap and the Foreshore share the routes.
