Country doors, and what the weather does
Winelands garages are bigger, older and more exposed than city ones. A farm shed door in Paarl or Wellington is wide enough for a bakkie and a trailer, made of steel that has been in the sun for thirty summers, and carrying a motor that was fitted when the farm got power to the shed. The heat expands and contracts the steel, the winter rain rusts the fixings, and the dust from the roads gets into every track and bearing. The repairs are ordinary — a spring, rollers, a motor gear — but the doors are heavier and the parts bigger than a suburban van's usual stock.
The town centres are different. Stellenbosch and Franschhoek have old houses on narrow streets with the same heritage-door questions as the City Bowl — timber tip-ups kept and automated in place, or replaced like-for-like — and new estates on the edges with the same developer-motor problems as the Northern Suburbs.
Distance, and how a call is planned
The Winelands are the furthest the vans go, and a call is planned rather than dispatched. A routine repair is booked for a day and paired with others in the area; the technician arrives with the parts for what was described on the phone, because a second trip for a spring size is a morning lost. That is why a photo on WhatsApp of the door, the motor and the spring before the visit matters more here than anywhere else — it is the difference between one visit and two.
An emergency is attended around the clock at the honest window for the road, which is long and is quoted as such. A farm door stuck open at night with equipment inside is a security problem and is treated as one.
Wide doors, and the motors for them
A shed door three or four metres wide is not a house door, and the motor for it is not a house motor. It is a heavy-duty unit rated for the weight and the width, often on a roll-up curtain because a sectional that wide needs ceiling structure most sheds do not have, and it is sized on the measuring visit rather than guessed. Where a farm has converted a shed to a garage and fitted a domestic motor to a commercial door, that motor has a short life, and a motor sized for the door is the honest answer when it fails.
All four towns are covered, with the drive planned in, and the vans carry the wide-door springs and the heavy-duty motors the country keeps needing.
