Estates, and the gate before the garage
Most Helderberg garages are behind an estate boom, and on a call to Somerset West the first question is not what the door is doing but which estate it is in and what that estate's contractor rules are. Some admit any technician a resident clears; some keep an approved list; a few will not admit an outside contractor at all. Finding out at the boom is how an arrival window is missed, and phoning the gatehouse while you are still on the phone to us is the thing that most shortens the wait.
Estate garages are also newer, and they have the new-build problems: motors chosen at handover for price rather than the door, beams never aligned, force limits at the factory default. The year-three or year-four motor failure is common, and a motor sized for the door is the honest fix.
The sea side, and the mountain side
Strand and Gordon's Bay are on the water, and the seafront doors have the coastal problems — salt on the motor board, rust in the cables, the bottom panel going from the edge up — while the doors up the slopes toward the Helderberg mountain are drier and last longer. A door in Gordon's Bay facing the bay is specified with stainless hardware and a sealed panel edge; the same door two streets back does not need it, and the measuring visit says which.
Steep stands are the Helderberg's other feature, particularly in Gordon's Bay, where a garage may be at street level with the house below it, and the driveway falls away from the door. A tip-up that swings out over a falling driveway is fine; one that swings out into a rising one is not, and the door type follows the slope.
The drive, honestly
The Helderberg is a real distance from where most of the vans run, and the arrival window says so. A routine call is booked for a day rather than an hour; an emergency — a door stuck open at night, a car locked in before work — is attended around the clock at the honest window for the road, which is longer than it is in the Southern Suburbs and is quoted as such. A technician who promises forty minutes to Gordon's Bay at eleven at night is not going to keep it.
The three suburbs are worked from the same routes, and a call is often paired with another in the area so the drive is not the whole job.
