The blocks
Vredehoek is largely apartment blocks, and the garage door on a block is the basement roller shutter or sectional that every resident drives through. When it fails it fails for the building, and the call comes from the managing agent with forty residents' cars behind it. A basement door stuck shut at seven in the morning is treated as an emergency at any hour, secured first, and repaired around the residents. The motors are commercial units on commercial cycles, and a motor repair on one is a different parts list from a house door.
The houses on the slope
Above the blocks the houses are cut into the mountain like Oranjezicht next door — odd openings, low headroom on one side, driveways falling to the street — and a roll-up or a low-headroom sectional is the door that fits. The south-easter is hard here and brackets and hinges are checked on every visit.
