Chelsea Village and the heritage door
Wynberg's Chelsea Village is one of the oldest streetscapes in the city, and its cottages have garages that were added into whatever gap there was, with timber doors that suit the houses and a heritage overlay that has a view on what replaces them. A timber tip-up kept and automated in place is usually the right answer, and a like-for-like replacement made to the opening is the answer when the frame has gone. A steel sectional on the front of a Chelsea cottage is the wrong door, and we will say so.
The hill, and Main Road
Up the hill toward Constantia the stands widen and the garages become the double steel sectionals of the Southern Suburbs, with the ordinary work — springs, rollers, a motor gear — on doors worth keeping. Along Main Road it is flats with basement doors on a body corporate's list, booked through the managing agent and treated as an emergency when a whole block cannot get its cars out.
Getting here
Wynberg is minutes off the M3. Kenilworth, Plumstead and Constantia are the same routes, and the whole suburb is at the fast end of the range at any hour.
