Village doors, full exposure
Melkbos is a village at the end of the West Coast, and its doors face the Atlantic with nothing in the way. The roll-ups have sand in their guides and salt on their fixings; the steel sectionals lose their bottom panels and cables; the motors' boards corrode. Stainless hardware, a sealed panel edge and a motor on a service interval is the only specification that lasts, and a door fitted like a suburban door is replaced every few years.
Holiday houses
A large share of Melkbos is holiday property, and a door that has stood closed through a wet winter will not open in December — springs set, rollers rusted in, receiver batteries flat, board corroded. A service in October is cheaper than the December emergency, and it is a real drive to make twice.
Getting here
Melkbosstrand is the far end of the R27 and a real drive from the city; the window says so honestly. Big Bay, Bloubergstrand and Parklands share the routes, and calls are paired with others on the coast so the drive is not the whole job.
