Mountain on one side, vlei on the other
Kirstenhof is squeezed between the Tokai mountainside and Zandvlei, and its doors get the damp of the first and, on the vlei side, a touch of the salt air that comes off False Bay. Steel fixings rust, bottom panels bubble, timber swells in winter. The doors are eighties sectionals and tip-ups, good ones, and the work is springs, rollers and a cable and track visit that finds a bracket rusted loose. Where a bottom panel has gone, one panel with stainless hinges is the fix.
Holiday lets and the December call
Kirstenhof has a share of False Bay's holiday lets, and a door that has stood closed through winter will not open in December — springs set, rollers rusted in, receiver batteries flat. A service in October is cheaper than the December emergency.
Getting here
Kirstenhof is off the M3 at Tokai and quick to reach. Tokai, Steenberg and Lakeside share the routes.
