The vlei and the slope
Lakeside sits between Zandvlei and the Boyes Drive mountainside, and its doors get a little of each. On the flat toward the vlei the air carries False Bay's salt and steel fixings rust — a cable and track visit here often finds a bracket rusted loose, and a bottom panel bubbling from the edge is replaced with stainless hinges. Up the slope the garages are cut into the hill with the odd openings of the whole False Bay mountainside, and a roll-up or a low-headroom sectional is the door that fits.
Established homes, ordinary work
Most of Lakeside is established family housing from the seventies and eighties with steel sectionals and tip-ups doing the ordinary work — a spring on a door that has done its cycles, a motor gear on a unit worth keeping, automation in place where the driveway has the swing.
Getting here
Lakeside is off the M3 at Tokai and quick to reach. Muizenberg, Kirstenhof and Steenberg share the routes, and an emergency is at the fast end of the False Bay range.
