Cottages on the lanes
Bakoven is smaller and older than Camps Bay next door: cottages and a few villas on narrow lanes running down to the rocks, with garages squeezed in where they could be and openings that no standard door fits. A roll-up made to the opening is usually the answer, and on the older cottages a timber tip-up kept for the look and automated in place where the lane has the swing.
The Atlantic, first-hand
The doors here face the open sea with no shelter, and the spray does what it does in Clifton: boards corrode, cables rust through, panels go from the edge. Every steel part is stainless, the panel edge is sealed, and the motor is checked on a service interval rather than waited on.
Getting here
Bakoven is minutes past Camps Bay on Victoria Road. Camps Bay, Llandudno and Clifton share the routes, and an emergency is at the fast end of the coastal range.
