Established homes and manual doors
Fish Hoek's valley is family and retirement housing from the seventies and eighties, and a good share of its garage doors are still manual steel tip-ups — simple, durable and increasingly heavy for the people lifting them. Automation in place is the commonest call in the suburb: pivot springs renewed so the door is balanced, a motor with an arm designed for a swinging panel, beams and remotes, on driveways that have the room for the swing. It keeps a door that would cost far more to replace and it ends the lifting.
The beachfront and the salt
Toward the beach and along Beach Road the doors get False Bay's salt: bottom panels go from the edge, cables rust from the inside, motor boards corrode. Stainless replacements stop it recurring, and a panel replacement here comes with stainless hinges as a matter of course.
Getting here
Fish Hoek is a real drive via Ou Kaapse Weg or the Main Road, and the window says so. Kalk Bay, Simon's Town and Noordhoek share the routes, and an emergency is attended at the honest window.
